Toast 1/8 teaspoon aniseeds in a small dry sauté pan over medium heat until fragrant, 30 to 40 seconds. Press them lightly with the back of a spoon or gently with a mortar and pestle, only to gently crack the seeds. Place the aniseeds in the coffee pot. Fill the coffee maker with the coffee and water, brew, and allow to sit to 3 to 5 minutes. Pass through a sieve and serve with sugar, if desired.
